Which information is best?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the road2graduation.com RSS feed.
Not sure how to subscribe?
Then take a look at this post - What is RSS and how to use it.

Today, I’ve been searching around the web for some blogs to read from and share my views with, all on the subject of University/College; whether studying at university, or lecturers/professors, and education in general. I used the ‘monster’ search engine and ‘Googled’ these terms, as well as looking on deli.cio.us, reddit, digg and many other social media bookmarking software - I’m sure many of you use these.

So, the really frustrating bit was visiting many sites and blogs, to find out that most of the content hadn’t been updated for over a year. Although the information on many of the blogs/sites was really helpful, most was old and posted ages ago, if you’re like me you’ll like fresh content from blogs via an rss feed (duh, most people do), even if the information is re-formatted and written on content that has been already covered previously.

However, I did find a few resources helpful and informative enough to share:

Current & Updated Blogs

Nextstudent.com’s student blog is a new and interesting blog, it is American based and has interesting information on it, especially their blog post on being successful in college.

Gradtips.com - provides near to and recent graduates with tips and incite in their future. If you’re in your final year then this is a blog to subscribe to. I particularly like the post - Students on a budget, cheap eats and dates in Australia.

PsychBLOG.co.uk - Even if you’re not a psychology student this site has much interesting information. It is added to by a few authors and has some valuable information in the resources section.

Student Help Forum - A blog with a difference, it has so many great resources that it links to that each post can’t be singled out. Although it hasn’t been updated for over a month I still find this blog a valuable resource.

Outdated Blogs with good info

Whether these bloggers have left the eduction world or simply have given up on blogging I’m not sure, but there is some relevant information contained on the sites that I think will be of interest. The easiest way to check if a blog is outdated (in my eyes) is if there has been no posts for over a month.

Students Blog Too - is a limited resource that goes through the process of blogging as a student. If you’re looking to blog then this is a good resource to check out.

Howtogetafirst.co.uk - is a valuable resource for undergraduates who are studying in the UK, I particularly like the post about using your university intranet.

Where to look for more resources?

If you’re looking for blogs more specific to your subject/country, then you could try searching on Google, or Google’s blog search (beware that when you use the latter it will generally search blog posts for keywords and not actual blog titles), and blogger or wordpress could be great sites to start searching. Mybloglog, Stumbleupon and Technorati are also favourites that I use to search for new information on blogs - by keyword. You can use these sources as well as other search engines, such as Yahoo, MSN or AOL.

If anyone has any additional blog resources, or even forums that could help other people please leave a comment and I’ll take a look.

    Hi Jez,

Thanks for the info. Maybe it’s best for you to remove the date posts on the blog, so people can access your resources without being impeeded by ‘is this up-to-date and a good source?’

    Just a thought

    Hi Nick,

There is a plugin that rotates posts, re-dating your oldest post and putting it back up front every x days, then you just need to remove dates from comments… I may get round to it sometime…

    Jez,

I think that would be much better, as to not confuse any new readers. Are you thinking of adding any new content though?
